Last night my friends and I checked out one of the newest additions to downtown Atlanta’s dining scene, White Oak Kitchen & Cocktails. Located at the corner of Peachtree and Baker, the restaurant is large and airy with floor to ceiling windows, rustic wood furnishings and an inviting atmosphere. The restaurant seats more than 300, extremely large for a downtown restaurant considering most residents pack up at the end of the day and head to the burbs. That being said, anyone that gives this place will be duly impressed and know that it is destination worthy.

Richard, Jan’s husband, had the scallops with black eyed peas, spinach, hammock hock, sherry butter and crispy okra. Like Jan, he ate every bite. Always a clear indicator that the meal was delicious. My friend Byron had the trout with Sea Island red peas, butter squash, and bacon-braised collard greens. Overall he liked the meal, but with two caveats: the fish was a little dry and the bacon flavor in the collard greens didn’t come through as much as he had hoped or anticipated.

I had the pork shank with orange gremolata, mustard-creamed leeks and Brussels sprout leaves. They had me with the leeks and Brussels sprouts, but the pork shank was the star of this dish. It was melt in your mouth, no knife necessary heavenly. The meat was so tender it just forked off with each bite. The orange gremolata added the perfect brightness to what could have been a heavy feel. And of course, the accompanying vegetables were delicious! The portion size was an unexpected plus. I’m not sure if it was because I had already enjoyed apps and a salad, but the shank portion with the veggies was a gracious plenty. So much so that I am looking forward to my leftover shank tonight. I can only say that this was one of the best pork dishes I’ve had in recent memory.

So, whether you are looking for a great after work watering hole or just want a great Southern-inspired meal, I highly recommend putting White Oak Kitchen & Cocktails on your top 10 list! It’s a great addition to the Atlanta dining scene.
As always…I am the Tasteless Gourmand!
