HOW SWEEEET IT IS…

As an anosmiac and a tasteless gourmand, I am constantly trying new things hoping to catch a hint of aroma or modicum of flavor. I am convinced that I will eventually hit on that perfect combination of smell and taste! Today was another attempt at my perfect storm. I walked into a brown bag lunch meeting to find the most intriguing dessert I have ever seen. They looked like the small dessert shots you find at most restaurants these days (a trend I believe originated at Season’s 52); however, upon closer observation, I realized these were not at all the same. Some of  you may be familiar with icing or frosting shots, but I was not.

As I studied the treats closely, a few of my colleagues came into the room and begin to marvel at the delightful aroma in the room. Alas, I wasn’t picking up the smell, but I was hopeful that I would be able to enjoy the flavors (Orange Dreamsicle, Oreo Cookie, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup, Bubblegum, etc.).  Now, as someone that never met a sweet concoction she didn’t like, I had to give these adorable treats a try.

(As a sidebar, I have to admit that icing shots are by no means on the new approach to healthy eating – i.e. DIET – that I’m trying to embrace, but I’ve been really good so far this week, so I decided it was o.k.).

I selected the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup thinking the alternating layers of peanut butter and chocolate icings would register with my tastebuds. I didn’t get much in the flavor department, but I can tell you one thing…these little treats pack a POWERFUL sweetness! As I’ve explained before, I can sense the five basic tastes and when I say the icing shots were TOO sweet for me…that’s saying A LOT! It was so sweet, I couldn’t even finish the tiny serving.

After this experience, I think I’m going to stick to the mini desserts. At least I get a more balanced level of sweetness and varying textures that have become so critical to my dining.

So for my fellow anosmiacs as well as my non-anosmiac readers, tread cautiously into the icing shots arena. Oh how sweeeet it is….
